I sent out an email to my homeschool support group today, asking for donations of warm items of clothing for the local homeless people. As a result, I decided to get out the knitting machine and make a double layer hat. I measured the gauge from the Harry Potter scarf I made a couple of weeks ago as I was going to use the same yarn. Calculated the number of stitches and rows. And I was off...
The hat in progress. Using all 100 needles, because that's what I figured I needed for the circumference of the hat. The main colour is grey, as that's what I had most of. One half of the hat incorporated some blue stripes, the other half some green stripes.
The plan was to have a 21 inch square piece of knitting. Of course, I didn't measure it straight off the machine because it tends to shrink after coming off the needles.
Anyway, I sewed it into a tube....
sewed up the ends....
and sewed the pointy bits together to round the ends....
and pushed one half of the hat inside the other half....
and hey presto, a hat .... er, maybe not, unless it's for Hagrid (a half-giant in Harry Potter, if you don't already know that).
Oh well, I thought, I'll wash it and dry it in the dryer and it'll shrink down a bit.
It didn't.
Guess what's next! Yup, ripping it all out and doing it over in a much smaller size.

Hi Hi, You should have warned to put aside my cup of tea as well! I love it! There must be someone out there with a big sized head??? Ik looks like a wonderful tea cosy!! Or maybe you can use it as a cover for a sewing machine...

Hmmm... if you put in some eyeholes and a opening to breathe through, this hat could be a great balaclava. Guaranteed to keep you warm!
