WSS warning

There I was innocently sitting down the other night to watch an episode of North and South, purely for my own educational improvement in certain areas of historical importance (wink, wink), when what should appear before my eyes but a White Shirt. A fine white shirt! Well...what's a WSS sufferer to do? Surely I couldn't turn it off, after all, we are in the middle of studies on the Industrial Revolution. As a mom to homelearning boys I consider it my duty to know all manner of Industrial Revolution type things...such as the inner workings of cotton mills, the class system of mill towns, what handsome young mill owners are wearing, etc. (turns out that they are wearing white shirts, who knew?) This particular mill owner could give Mr.Darcy a run for his money in the "best scowl" category...if there ever were such a category. (and oh how I wish there were) ;-) So...it turns out, that in the interest of thorough research, the only thing to do is to watch All Four Episodes of North and South in one sitting...and to stay up quite late to do so. That way, I can watch it all over again before it is due back at the library. You see what a dedicated mom to homelearners I am? :-)

I have never seen North & South, but I am a devoted follower of everything Jane Austen. We (my dd and I) own two movie versions each of Sense & Sensibility, Persuasion, Pride & Prejudice, and Emma. I think we are afflicted with WSS!! I researched your previous post concerning the symptoms, and WE HAVE IT!! I have to agree with the remedy, so I will now go on the computer and check to see if our local library has a copy of North & South. It has to be part of the cure. Thank you so much for enlightening me on the remedy.

Oh as a p.s. Rupert Penry Jones was also in a much earlier version of Jane Eyre. He played the preacher that wanted to marry Jane.

What I want to know about North & South is its rating? Would kids who've seen P&P (the long version of course) and S&S etc, be ok with it? I just don't have the time to pre-watch or watch on my own any more.....

WOW!! Who knew how some good visuals could make a song so much more enjoyable. ;-) Thanks for that link, I've bookmarked it as I can see there are a few men in white shirts film adaptations of erm...important historical novels that I’ve yet to see. ;-)

I always hesitate to recommend movies for children, I think we all have such different ideas of what is suitable for our kids to watch. My boys have been pretty sheltered from violence and other images and situations that I consider "difficult" to watch. There are many movies that most of their friends have seen that they have not yet watched. I figure they have plenty of time to watch these in years to come when they seem more ready to deal with them. North and South is definitely more "contemporary" in its filming and I would say edgier and grittier than S&S or P & P for sure. (still in a very polite way, of course) ;-) Two of the characters that die in the film are shown quite close-up and I know my boys would not be very comfortable seeing those bits. The film also deals with the pretty harsh reality of hunger, poverty, illness, death and conflict amongst strikers, workers and mill owners. I suppose that my boys could watch it...and if there was some sword fighting or something then they might want to, but generally they aren't all that interested in this sort of film yet.

Sorry that I can't be more helpful than that but what I can tell you with utter certainty is that previewing this film is not a hardship. Trust me!! You'll likely want to watch it at least twice anyway. Seriously. ;-)

Happy viewing,
H

What a coincidence! I just now found this blog after making a pouch from a tutorial I found on Sew Me Something Good. And I just watched North and South for the first time only two days ago, staying up until one or two in the morning to finish it! Love, love, love it--especially the last scenes. I'm a sucker for a good love story.
