Plums

I am trying to get all the plums off one of our trees frozen today. I always think that we will be able to eat them all fresh but even though we make quite an effort there is still a lot (an awful lot) that need to be dealt with before we leave. The problem is that my two freezers are almost full of fruit already( we have smoothies every morning year-round). I am trying to decide if I should get a third freezer that I could have plugged in from about September until January to help with the excess of produce that we have (haven't even got to any tomato preserving yet). It seems so silly to need three freezers (plus the small one on our fridge), and a bit of a waste of energy but on the other hand I think of all the energy that I would be saving by having all my own food stocked away in my own home. Any thoughts anyone? I already unplug one of my freezers in about April and just run the one year-round. If I had another freezer I could freeze all kinds of things so that I would hardly have to purchase any produce at all throughout the year. Hmmm, I think that I am talking myself into it and will have to start keeping my eyes open for a freezer. Would love to hear from anyone who has experience with putting away enough produce to sustain their family for the year. I also do tons of canning and have a cold room filled with shelves full of preserves but I love the simplicity of having frozen stewed tomatoes, etc in the freezer.
In the meantime I will have to increase my intake of fresh plums. Plum smoothie anyone?

I'll be right over for one of those smoothies! How do you freeze the plums? They are not a "freestone" type like our prune plums and I would think they are very messy to pit. They taste wonderful though.

They are messy but i just slice off both sides to get as much off the pit as I can. If you want some come over today (soon) and get some before I freeze them all. All that wind yesterday kept knocking them all off the tree. Everytime I went out there were more all over the ground attracting wasps. Nasty wasps that kept stinging my baby boy and making his face all swell up so that he feels that he looks like "cyclops". I am not very happy about it. Please come get some.

Yummy! That does look good. I think I'll have to make myself a smoothie now :)
